Love Is Our Secret

"The Best Man" is being compared to "The Taming Of The Shrew"

"The Taming Of The Shrew" shows that the fathers had a lot of say in who the daughters married in that time. They were allowed to say no or yes to who they thought was good or bad for there daughters. In the movie "Guess Who" the father is introduced to the daughter's fiancé, who he has an issue with because he was white. In the movie and the play, the position of the parent has stayed the same but they are dealing with different issues.

"Baptista: "Sir, pardon me in what i have to say.

Your plainness and your shortness please me well.

Right true it is your son Lucentio here

Doth love my daughter, and she loveth him,"

(Act 4, Scene 4, 39-42)

In this scene Baptista is talking to Lucentio's father about how his daughter loves his son and so does Lucentio love his daughter. He is saying that he approves of there love and would love for them to marry. This quote show that baptista wants there to be love between his daughter and who she marries instead of it just being nothing more than just money and wealth. he wants his daughter to have more than just a guy that will feed her but to love her and cherish her. In comparison to the movie Percy towards the end of the movie when they are at the train stop tells Simon that if he loves her it is alright with him to marry her and he would love to have him as her husband because he loves her.

One of the issues that was in the movie "Guess Who" was that Percy (above) didn't like the fact that Simon (above) was caucasian. The first time Percy met Simon he thought that he was Theresa's taxi driver because they where getting out of a taxi at house. This shows that Percy had ethnicity expectations for his daughter husband. He wanted someone more like them. In the play Baptista was highly upset when Petruchio came to the wedding looking like a bum. In this scene Biondello says

"Why, Petruchio is coming in a new hat and an old jerkin, a pair of old breeches thrice turned, a pair of boots that have been candle-cases, one buckled, another laced, an old rusty sword ta'en out of the town-armory, with a broken hilt, and chapeless;..." (Act 3, Scene 2, 42-47).

This was very unexceptionable to Baptista.

Finally, you need your CONCLUSION. This paragraph should specifically mention BOTH the play and the movie, and touch on the central question of the assignment: What do these portrayals show us about society's attitudes towards courtship/dating?
